From its Landrush launch last Friday until yesterday, it has managed to outgrow the already well-established gTLD .biz. If the current rate of new registrations continues, .eu is sure to outgrow .info within approximately four months.
After four months, with two Sunrise periods, the .eu TLD was finally released in Landrush last Friday. This means that everyone in the European Union can apply for any available .eu domain name. During the Sunrise periods, EURid, the registry of .eu, received 346.218 applications, in comparison with approximately 800.000 applications within the first 24 hours of Landrush.
Today there are 1.454.128 active .eu domain names, a number that surpasses 1.352.984 active .biz domain names. The .biz TLD was introduced in 2001 and is to be used for “bona fide business or commercial use”. However, Neulevel, the registry of .biz, dont apply any systematic to ensure these restrictions.
The daily rate of new .eu registrations is of course decreasing, but if it stabilizes at 10.000/day the .eu TLD will outgrow the .info TLD within approximately four months. The .info TLD was introduced in 2000, it doesnt have any restrictions and there are today 2.616.048 registered .info domain names.
Afilias, the registry of .info, also manage the .org TLD and several ccTLDs. A part of the success with .info is the one-year free registration campaigns that theyve had in the past.
