People are interested in chatting about a variety of things—the latest sports win, TV show, or a certain current event. Often, their first instinct is to perform an online search of a web community in which they can post their thoughts and ideas. Suddenly, they realize that there are thousands of online communities to participate in. But which one should they visit and, most importantly, continually come back to?
Let’s get it started
Creating an online community can take up a great deal of time—but determining the exact amount of time needed is an impossible task. Individuals not only have to create the site, but also have to get going with exciting content that keeps people coming back.
For those who are new to the subject, an online community can even start in an area as simple as a bulletin board. Individuals can review the posted content and decide if they want to be a part of the discussion. Once they feel that this is something they would like to partake in, they can log in, create an alias, and post their ideas.
Or, newbies can set up a chat room. This allows the host (or administrator) to set up meeting times, moderate what is being said, or let people chat whenever they feel the desire to do so.
No matter what the posting method, the best way to create a successful site is by focusing on one specific topic. People will be more willing to stay on topic and provide interesting content on the matter at hand.
Allowing aliases
Although anonymity can be a good thing, as it allows people to speak candidly about their thoughts on a given subject, it also allows people to hide behind their ISP, with little consequence about what they are saying.
Instead of allowing people to post anonymously, many online community creators have instead introduced pseudonyms, which still allow individuals to hide their real identity from online users, but build a reputation with an online name.
After all, isn’t a person’s reputation one of the most important things to them? Even though they may have an online pseudonym, that name is how others in the community know them. In time, this will become as important as their real name in their every day lives.
Don’t be afraid to get fresh
To put it simply: content is everything. If everyone is contributing exciting, interesting and informative content that brings the community together, then it’s working. Otherwise, it could spell disaster.
Site administrators should try to keep the site updated daily, with new content, photos, and other information. It’s no secret that this will be very difficult at first and will require a great deal of time. But once others see that the content of the site is high quality, they will be willing to participate and take it more seriously. And the administrator won’t be the only one bringing new information for everyone to enjoy.
Great content is especially important in the early stages of the site. Sometimes this means asking friends or family to provide words or images to make the community appealing. Try to provide information that has somewhat of an edge; makes people think. Remember, the main thing is to get people to comment and provide feedback and discussion. Keep the ideas flowing.
