July 31, 2006 – (TopHosts News Brief) – Revealing its support for the open source movement, Google announced the launch of a developers site to host open source projects.
To be located at code.google.com, the new service goes head to head with VA Software Corporation’s SourceForge.net. Unlike SourceForge.net, Google’s service will be ad-free.
Reports say Google will use the open source version control system Subversion, to which several Google developers contribute. The Subversion repository will store projects’ code and other data in Google’s BigTable database, which is also the data store behind Google Reader. BigTable can run on thousands of inexpensive computers for load balancing and reliability.
According to reports, Google’s new source code hosting service is not yet ready for production use. However, when integrated with Google Groups, GMail, Google Talk and other services, the offer could become very popular with developers.
