February 12, 2008 - (TopHosts News Brief) Web hosting provider, Hosting.com, Inc. announced that its San Francisco data center is now climate neutral. The company is anticipating that the amount of carbon it will be neutralizing in San Francisco is the equivalent of not burning 260,000 gallons of gasoline a year. In addition, Hosting.com covers the cost of climate neutrality for the homes of all of its employees as a means of pursuing green initiatives through the use of green power, energy efficient data center design, and enterprise virtualization solutions.
“One of our major corporate responsibility initiatives for 2008 is environmentally friendly energy use. We believe all companies have an obligation to protect our environment with proactive measures today rather than sitting around and debating whether global warming has or has not happened. Green power is readily available today, and large power consumers like data center providers owe it to themselves and future generations to explore these opportunities to make positive change,” suggested Hosting.com President and CEO, Darren King in a news release.
Experts believe that the percentage of power consumption by data centers in the United States will rise dramatically in the future as they currently utilize between 1% and 2% of all power consumption, especially with the increasing number of data centers due to the increased use of the Internet as a means of content delivery, software and services. There are several simple and very practical implementations readily available to reduce carbon emissions, so Hosting.com is urging legislators and business leaders to assess energy consumption sources for data centers.
