February 2, 2009, Dallas, TX — SoftLayer Technologies, the on-demand virtual data center services provider, has added SUSE Linux Enterprise Server from Novell, Inc., to its wide portfolio of fully supported server operating systems (OSs). SUSE is an enterprise-grade distribution of the open source Linux OS. It will be available to all SoftLayer customers for no additional cost.
“In today’s economic climate, there is an even greater need for enterprises to lower their total cost of IT. But no one can afford to do that at the cost of power or stability. SUSE answers both challenges,” said Nathan Day, SoftLayer Chief Technology Officer. “We’re committed to bringing our customers current, effective solutions like SUSE. They can focus on their own business challenges and trust we’re always finding better ways to meet their IT needs.”
SUSE provides the open source benefits of Linux along with important enterprise features, including:
* Microsoft Management Tools compatibility
* Support for Xen virtual machines
* Scalability for running unlimited virtual machines
SoftLayer is leveraging Novell ZENworks Linux Management for the installation and management of all SUSE deployments. As with all SoftLayer services, SUSE can be ordered and provisioned on-demand, in real time for any SoftLayer server through the company’s industry-leading Customer Portal or API.
