The Managing Director of Peer 1’s UK Web hosting division wants British Prime Minister, Gordon Brown to step up and give more support to Britain’s online retailers.
Dominic Monkhouse wrote Brown’s office encouraging him to provide tax incentives to online businesses which will aid in job creation, economic stimulation and generate much needed revenue for the country.
Monkhouse says: “Britain offers advantages in terms of infrastructure, language, time-zone and geographic location which means that we can become the world leader in terms of online retail across Europe and North America. A small investment and the right stimulus package could create a world-leading sector. The time to act is now.
The numbers do indeed back up the potential for growth in the sector. Research from CBI Submission
shows that online commerce has grown twenty times faster than the overall UK retail market since 2005 and the number of online shoppers has climbed more than 25 percent to 14.6 million.
Cyber Monday in the UK was on December 7th and online shoppers were expected to spend between 350M to 400M GBP ($567-$648 million USD) on Christmas presents, a new record for the country. The Internet Measurement Research Group (IMRG) predicts that 93 percent of UK shoppers would buy some gifts online this year.
