TopHosts.com News Brief [May 19, 2010] - IBM (NYSE: IBM) has secured a contract to be the IT infrastructure and Web hosting provider for core business functions of the Australian Government’s National Broadband Network Company, NBN Co.
Described as a “landmark nation-building engineering project”, the Federal Government of Australia is investing in a multi-billion dollar plan that will connect 90 percent of Australian premises with fiber-based services.
“IBM’s technology and services capabilities will provide NBN Co with the flexible, robust infrastructure platform it needs to deliver this large-scale complex engineering initiative. A successfully delivered enhanced broadband platform is a vital step towards a smarter nation, enabling Australians to be better connected, more productive and enjoy a better quality of life,” said Glen Boreham, IBM Australia and New Zealand Managing Director.
The two year agreement, which was signed in April 2010, will see IBM acquiring servers, storage and operating systems as well as hosting mission-critical accounting, procurement, and asset management systems. IBM says that the Web hosting platform “will be based upon ultra-thin, energy efficient System x3650 server technology delivered in a secure, high-availability data center environment.”
