Go Daddy’s CEO Bob Parsons shot an elephant while on vacation and himself in the foot, from the looks of it.
Killing these magnificent creatures is taboo to many and openly displaying it for all to see on his Twitter account has public relations nightmare written all over it.
Parsons explained to Mashable.com that he and a band of hunters intervened to help a farmer, at his own request, to protect his sorghum field threatened by wild elephants. He said: “Zimbabweans have very little. Many die each year from starvation and one of the problems they have is the elephants, of which there are thousands and thousands, that trash many of their fields destroying the crops.”
Parsons further rationalized why he shot the one elephant in the middle of the night: “If you had the choice to take a few elephants or to let people starve - what choice would you make?”
Web hosting and domain registration firms have already started to capitalize on the Web guru’s act by encouraging and facilitating easy switch-overs.
For example, Domain.com said that customers can use a coupon code FEEDAFRICA to transfer domain names for $4.99/year through April 7, 2011 and it plans to donate $1 for each coupon used to Heifer International, a non-profit organization dedicated to relieving global hunger and poverty all over the world.
Canadian-based HostPapa plans to donate $5 to the charity Save the Elephants for every Go Daddy domain or Web hosting customer who transfers and employs their services. Customers are eligible for free domains for life and three months of free Web hosting by using the coupon code “elephant” until the end of April.
As you might expect, irate customers of the Web hosting giant, animal lovers and people in general are deluging the popular social networks with angry outbursts.
