Does it strike you as a bit unusual that a Web hosting company is getting into the online dating scene? Or is this a match meant to be?
Well, to fill you in, Columbus, OH-based iB3 Networks acquired an upscale dating site that Manhattanites and the like should be flocking to in the first quarter of 2009. It’s the soon to be released MadisonAvenueMatch.com.
It's a little different you have to admit. But think about it. A heavily trafficked site requires solid Web hosting, fail-safe Internet connection, 100 percent uptime etc. That's not a worry, given that iB3 runs a Tier 4 data center facility that's green friendly to boot. The customer and tech support have to be in place already to run a good hosting outfit. That makes sense. And online dating, I'm told, is a multi-billion dollar industry. They've also retained the dating site's creator, Michael Jacobson as president of the company. Incidentally, Jacobson was the publisher of The Donald's Trump Magazine.
Maybe they really have something here. Different strokes for different Web hosts. I guess it's not that far fetched to venture out into something new that is potentially profitable. Our parent company, VerticalScope Inc. branched into automotive magazines in 2002 and ran it profitably for years before selling it, well, for a tidy profit. The desire to succeed, the market opportunity and, of course, the Web hosting makes it all happen. Maybe some of the cash rich hosters should ask what eHarmony is going for these days.

Is it time for a Web hosting tribe?
