The fact that IBM wants to make a big splash in Cloud Computing will surprise no one. Big Blue, an infrastructure behemoth and a Web hosting giant, will contend in all related markets.
Today, IBM announced that it will begin selling a suite of Web-based collaboration software that includes contact management, instant messaging and file sharing programs. This is a major step for the company and they are wasting no time whatsoever. Sales are slated to begin on April 7th.
When you read statements from IBM’s Vice President Sean Poulley such as: “What you are seeing are the beginnings of the whole IBM company moving toward cloud computing” you had better take notice. This coupled with the potential acquisition of Sun Microsystems sets up a showdown in the Cloud Computing market for sure. What’s at stake? Gartner released numbers recently calling for a 21.3 percent hike in the worldwide Cloud Services revenues from $46.4 billion in 2008 to $56.3 billion in 2009. And that takes a big leap to $150.1 billion in 2013.
The funny thing is that businesses are still the winners considering what IBM is offering. Users will pay between $10 to $45 a month and not have to worry about any hardware or networking headaches all thanks to the cloud. I’d put this one in the winner’s column for now, but the battle has barely begun.
