Web hosts branching out of their comfort zone, that’s exciting isn’t it? It takes some guts and hopefully a handful of credible market research to validate your instincts.
Turnkey Internet’s decision to move into Web conferencing fits that bill. Okay they went via acquisition of Voxwire Systems, but the risk warrants a tip of the hat nonetheless. Turnkey’s VPS and managed hosting now will expand to scalable Web conferencing services which include screen and file sharing, PowerPoint presentations, whiteboards, text-chatting and polling.
Businesses worldwide have been cutting costs over the years on travel and many prefer the convenience that Web conferencing offers. The fact that the market is expected to grow to $2.9 billion by 2011 (Frost & Sullivan) is noteworthy.
How the company executes on the marketing of this new service suite is the challenge. I'm sure some larger Web hosting customers at the SMB or enterprise level will be receiving calls and emails soon but the target audience here is huge. Accordingly, Turnkey has already identified that schools looking to expand their distance learning capabilities will need to take a look at the Voxwire product. And drawing from the old school Web hosting mentality, the company will add a private-label reseller solution in addition to the regular retail channel.
Chances are that this Albany, NY-based company of nine and $250,000 in yearly revenues is on the brink of bigger and much better things. I'm sure several entrepreneurs with piles of cash on the side, and no hesitation about meandering outside the comfort zone will give this company a second glance; or just hit the buy button on a gutsy call, after checking the market research.
