In an effort to “deliver anytime, anywhere protection against web-based threats,” Internet gear provider Cisco announced today it will acquire ScanSafe for $183 million.
ScanSafe pioneered the SaaS Web security market back in 2004 and is widely acknowledged as the market leader in the field. Research group IDC reports that ScanSafe holds over 30 percent of the worldwide SaaS Web security market which is expected to grow to $513 million by 2013; over the next five years IDC forecasts a compound annual growth rate of 46.5 percent.
Dasient, another security solutions provider, today reported that between July and September this year an estimated 5.8 million pages belonging to 640,000 websites were found to be infected with code devised to launch malware attacks on visitors. Microsoft, in April, identified that approximately 3 million pages were infected.
Clearly Cisco’s timing couldn’t be better, wouldn’t you say?
