If someone asked me to name the biggest cloud computing company in existence I’d say Google. It’s a safe bet and nobody would laugh. But would it be accurate?
Amazon is another good guess. Rackspace is also getting there. We could go on. There’s an article that asks straight up: Will One Company Become the Dominant Player in Cloud Computing? And the article also considers that the cloud just might be too big to own for a single, dominant player. Nevertheless companies in consideration are: Google, Microsoft, Apple, VMware, IBM, HP, Cisco, Amazon, Salesforce and Facebook.
I’m not laughing at any of those other choices but I’d like to add another: Equinix. That’s correct. The big data center service company that opened its 50th IBX just last week in London, England.
I didn't just happen to think of that either. Kevin Fogarty of CIO.com wrote in What Does The Cloud Really Look Like? that Salesforce.com runs entirely from data centers owned by Equinix. That represents about 1,000 or so Salesforce servers.
In fact, hundreds of companies offering cloud-based infrastructure, applications and content use the data center services of Equinix including Rackspace and Amazon to limited extents.
So as the cloud phenomenon escalates and companies position themselves in leadership roles, think of Equinix-the pure infrastructure provider, the great enabler and now my pick for the biggest cloud player in the shooting match.
