June 25th just might be the day online porn sites have been waiting for. Of course, as in everything else associated to pornography, it depends on how you look at it.
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has for years rejected the creation of .xxx generic domain for adult sites because of strong lobbying against it by conservative and special interest groups.
ICM Registry Inc. has followed ICANN’s rules for setting up a new top-level domain and now has the approval it has long sought. ICM Registry said it “will now work with ICANN staff to complete the expedited due diligence on our technical and financial qualifications and to finalize the contract to run .xxx.”
Roll out of .xxx domains will begin in early 2011 with 110,000 pre-reservations already submitted. Expect that number to expand quickly. According to information gathered by Internet Pornography Statistics more than $3,000 is spent on online porn every second. ‘Sex’ remains the number one search term in the world, accounting for approximately 25 percent of all Internet searches.
