With a $13 million dollar bid put in by Clover Holdings last week, sex.com becomes the most expensive domain ever. This deal, brokered by sedo.com, is still subject to approval from a bankruptcy judge on October 27th.
Some serious domainers will point out that insure.com sold for $16 million in 2009, but as The Economist rightly points out, the website was also included in that deal.
The Economist lists fund.com in the number two spot. Clek Media Inc. brokered that domain sale for $9,999,950 USD, in an all-cash transaction, in March 2008. And in the number three position?
Good for you if you selected porn.com. You know your domains. Moniker sold the domain to MXN Ltd. for $9.5 million in May 2007. Moniker’s CEO Monte Cahn said: “Porn.com will prove to be a valuable asset for MXN Ltd. because of its significant number of daily visitors, established type-in traffic in addition to being the top domain in the adult industry.”
The new owners of sex.com, if the deal goes through, will likely take issue with that.
