Carbon emissions can be reduced by 30 to 90 percent by using the operational and energy savings efficiencies of a larger data center rather than on-premise infrastructure. Interestingly, smaller companies stand to benefit the most in terms of reduced carbon footprint by as much as 90 percent, whereas medium-sized firms enjoy 30-60 percent reductions, and larger organizations can trim energy costs and carbon emissions by as much as 30 percent.
Server, networking and storage equipment were tested to determine the results on groups of 100, 1,000 and 10,000 using e-mail, content sharing and customer relationship management programs.
Microsoft commissioned the study, which was conducted by Accenture and WSP Environment & Energy.
