I have a shared hosting plan (1and1.com, business level) and I am considering upgrading to a VPS.
The primary reason is to get my php apps to process faster.
I have a very heavy image site and there is a lot of resizing, etc.
Its too slow with shared, but I don't want to pay another 20-40 bucks more a month for something that will not be much much faster.

I have read a lot about how you have control over your own apps and server, but not a lot about the speed differences.

I would also like some recommendations, but it needs to be a host in the northeast. My clients are all in NYC, and I want as few hops as possible.
