Default Re: Is 1&1 web hosting any good?

I HATE 1&1!!!!!!

Does that sum it up?? I recently am having the same problems with them. I am starting a new website soon to give customers an understanding of how some of these companies work... I just won't stand by and let my domain names be held hostage.. I OWN THEM!!! It may not seem like a huge deal, but it is to someone who is developing sites for business and need their names!! I am also alerting the media with this new "hostage" approach from these companies. I will make sure 1&1 will be the focus of the story, that's for damn sure! (BTW, you can sue, and I am all for a class action. If you can prove that they have hurt your business and income from this, you will have a case. I will post with more info after speaking with a lawyer who specializes in these situation.)

Here is an email I forwarded to a couple departments within 1&1 with no responseIt's quite long, but entertaining at the very least!)

To whom it may concern:

I have to say I am terribly disappointed in this service. My husband signed up for this account in December for the 3 months of service along with domain registration on 2 domain names. I actually build the websites and was going to build this site along with others to follow. Mis-communication and credit card information changes were the reason our bill was not paid for the following 3 months after the initial payment. Although this was our fault, I have personally been trying to take care of this bill for 2 weeks now.

After receiving a very uninformative email regarding the balance due for $25.94 was forwarded to your collections and to call an 800 number that ended up being NCO. The rep on the phone couldn't locate the account. I then called the other number in the email which was your billing department to see if I could correct this. The rep in your department informed me that the account was indeed sent to collections and to use the right reference number: 2v04dq. This number was never given to me. SO... back to NCO which took me 3 attempts to get someone on the line without accidentally hanging up on me or my phone call getting "lost." Finally, I get a rep!! Only that I could barely understand what he was saying because he sounded either to be asleep or high. His words were completely slurred together. After giving my "reference number" to him quite a few times, he finally got it right and pulled up the account.

I was then excited to just pay the balance so I can actually build the site. I asked to pay with a credit card. He then asked for the number. I then gave him the number a few times and I still had the feeling he had it wrong. After I gave him the number, he then told me about the $5 processing fee. I always think these fees are ridiculous, so I said to the rep ".....before you run that card..." and then he interrupted me to say "oh, no .. I didn't run it yet." I then explained to him that in order to avoid their fee, I want the bill sent to me so I could mail in payment. He at first said he couldn't do that.... I laughed... he then said "it will take too long, it could affect your credit by the time it gets to you." I replied "that's ok, send it anyway. He then stated "oh, your credit card was declined anyway." Hmmmm... thought he wasn't going to run it. Well thank god he was high or drunk and didn't get my correct number. (It's my bank card, so I know the balance). I again said to send the bill..... and he said "well, it will take about 30-60 days to get the bill to you 'cause it's an itemized bill, ya' know." I replied, ok just send it, I will pay it.

I am totally unconvinced he will send it.

With that said, I know you don't have control over NCO and how they handle accounts, but you do have control over helping me resolve this matter. I am trying to give you money for continued business and this is what my day consisted of. All so I can build my sites using your service. While you may be only losing one customer... I believe that we could have been a very beneficial client of yours.

I do own my domain names, which your rep reminded me that you guys will basically hold them hostage until I pay up so I can access the DNS settings. Well you see.... it may take 30-60 days to actually receive the bill. I just can't wait that long. So, I am going to follow up with another email tomorrow formally requesting you to change my DNS settings to point to another host. I understand you are a reseller for Schlund and partner, and I need to bring this request to your attention.

You may want to know that I believe in principles and adequate service above anything else. While I still believe your service would have been useful to my two communities (one of which was not registered through you yet....PHEEW!), I don't agree with your domain "hostage" approach.

I will contact you again tomorrow with my request.

Good luck in all future hostage attempts.
