Question Reseller Packages - Bandwidth/Storage Allocations

Hi! Wondering if anyone can help?

I am a small-time website developer and am looking at being able to host sites for my customers. I have found many packages with massive limits/unlimited Domain Hosting/Storage/Bandwidth etc for 5 to 15 USD per month. However, the same companies Reseller packages are more expensive AND the Storage and Bandwidth are tiny! Can anyone shed any light on this?

I understand that the Reseller accounts are more expensive as they allow your own customers to sign up online and have their own accounts, but why such limited Storage and Bandwidth?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

It's more than likely for better control purposes for the host. Stay away from the heavy oversellers. Your company is going to rely heavily on the quality of the host you choose, make sure they're good. If they have constant downtimes and don't support you well, your going to look bad to your clients. Do your research first.

Cheers Jim!

I appreciate the response, and have taken the advice on board...

However, the thing that I'm talking about is that certain companies advertise 200 Gig storage and 2000 Gig bandwidth on a shared package (with unlimited domains), but their resellers package only offers 12 Gig storage and 125 Gig bandwidth - I know that I'm new to this, but it really confuses me!

If I go with the reseller package and host 20 websites, each one has 600 Meg storage and 6.25 Gig bandwidth. Why do they advertise reseller packages that have less storage and bandwidth and are more expensive than using a shared package?

I hope you understand where I'm coming from! Hope you can help!

Hi jezchesters,
I think I do, let me try this and if I still don't get what you mean, let me know. All of the large packages you find like the ones you mentioned are overselling heavily. It's all in their marketing. What they do is offer everyone (in the case you mentioned) 200GB storage and 2000GB bandwidth for a small fee. They know most people will only use a couple hundred MB's space and at best a GB or maybe 2, especially in the beginning. So they pack all these people on a server that could never possibly handle it if everyone used the space they bought. (or think they did), then IF a person does start using to many resourses, but way below what their plan said they could use, the host will shut them off. Of course they shut you off without a refund. Odds are most people will not use that much and that's what they count on. Again, it's all in the marketing, and evidently for some reason some seem to market differently to resellers.
On a side note, you being a web designer and thinking about getting into hosting is a great idea! It's actually a natural way many people do it. We did, just started off building sites for some friends of ours, then hosted for them, then it grew from there. We now do much more hosting then web deisgn.
I hope that helped.
