You could probably write a 20,000 word essay about all the major SEO technicalities.
I'm no expert, but for Google placement and optimisation a good research paper is the Google patent - here it tells you all the the ranking algorithm techniques unique to Google. Not exactly light reading, but a good information source.

There are many factors to be considered when it comes to search engine optimization. Google is different from Yahoo and MSN too. Trying different techniques and doing the basic technique in optimizing a site is advisable even if it is on-page or off-page optimization.
