PageRank was created by Google. Google found a way to determine relevance and importance. An authority site. An authority site is one that Google specifies as having quality content and lots of it.
The importance of pagerank can be scored by the point that Google considers the pagerank as one of the main point while ranking a site in its search results. If you have a good pagerank then you have high chance to be ranked above any other lower ranked page.
Pagerank is the general algorithm of Google which ranks a site on the basis of its back links. In fact the main element of allocating a Pagerank to any webpage is the number of sites linking to the webpage and their own Pagerank value. This can also be taken as a popularly contest between high interest sites.
Some factors that are affecting PageRank:
1) Anchor Text of a link.
2) Prominence of a link on a webpage.
3) Relevance between web pages.
4) Importance of the linking pages.
5) Age of linking pages.
6) Age of your domain.
