Sometimes hosting providers offer deals better that domain name registrars, I mean both deals including free domains like those from lunarpages.com and marblehost.com, and also things like the one from webhostgiant.com where they offer low-cost domain name registration with 100% client ownership.

If 100% client ownership is stated in Webhostgiant.com TOS, I don't see any probs about registering domain names with them.
I think horror stories when a host registered a domain name in his own name and blackmailed his client who decided to transfer are all have become a thing of the past.

This has become the generally accepted web practice to register domains via hosting providers who are resellers for Enom or Directi as they allow domains either at prices significantly lower than those from doamin name registrars (http://hqhost.net/en/domain.html) or give then for free in the hosting packages (http://hostww.net/inner.php?id=hostww3&plan=default)

Is the host an ICANN accredited registrar ?

If not, before registering you domain through them, find out who they resell for and if you will be listed as registrant.

I registered a domain with Galaxy-Webhost when I got a reseller package with them Jan. 2010. I paid the full price of the domain and they still wouldn't release it. So, this is not a thing of the past.

I recommend NOT having your host register your domain. I would, however, register a domain with a host IF the host has an interface for you to login and register the domain with them yourself. Most good hosts have this.
