Default What is Shared Hosting?

Shared hosting, sometimes called shared services or virtual hosting, is simply when multiple web sites share the same server, thus reducing the cost for everyone.

With a shared hosting account, your site will usually be on a server with hundreds of other web sites. That may sound like a lot, but it usually works out extremely well because most sites don't generate enough traffic or use enough resources for it to become a problem.

Share hosting is suitable for personal sites, small businesses, and even medium sized businesses if their hosting needs fit within the parameters of a small business.

Most shared hosting providers offer substantially more disk space, data transfer, and email accounts than most people or businesses need. If every site used their quota, shared hosting would not work. But since few do, it actually works out quite nicely.

Because most people and businesses don't use most of the features they have available to them, using feature lists to choose a web host doesn't usually narrow the field much. What should be the criteria used to choose a host is harder to measure, so most people end up making uneducated choices and hope for the best.

If you visit my hosting selection criteria page I share with you what I think are the most important things to check into when opening a hosting account. My free ebook, How to Choose a Good Website Host goes into even more detail.

The only real problem with shared hosting is if the web host oversells. Overselling means the host has put too many sites on one server. A good server usually has at least a gigabyte of memory, but if thousands of sites have to fight it out for memory, CPU cycles, and bandwidth, it means all the sites will be slow. Fortunately, any good host will prevent this from becoming a problem in the first place.

This site, and all my sites are currently using shared hosting. I haven't had any problems with overselling. If you stick with a good hosting provider shared hosting will most likely work well for you too, allowing you to host your website for very little cost.

Shared hosting is Web hosting in which the service provider serves pages for multiple Web sites, each having its own Internet domain name, from a single Web server. Most Web hosting companies provide shared hosting. Although shared hosting is a less expensive way for businesses to create a Web presence, it is usually not sufficient for Web sites with high traffic. These sites need a dedicated Web server, either provided by a Web hosting service or maintained in-house.

Web hosting is the storage of a website and the delivery of its web pages to the Internet. With shared hosting, also known as virtual hosting, the web host houses the files for several websites on the same server. This allows your website to maintain a strong connection to the Internet without the cost of running your own server.
The web hosting company allows to each website a certain amount of disk storage space and a fixed bandwidth (data transfer capacity).

The primary advantage of shared hosting is that it is much less expensive than dedicated hosting, in which a single server is dedicated entirely to one website. Another advantage is that it's easy - by "outsourcing" your website, you don't need to have a technical staff to run it on your own. And a professional web hosting company usually offers reliability - your web host should guarantee that your website can be accessed anytime, and should have multiple systems to ensure constant connection to the Internet.
Shared hosting is usually a good option for individuals and small to midsized companies. It gives your website a strong connection to the Internet at a relatively low price, and you can also take advantage of the technical support of your web hosting company.

Shared hosting would be outsourced to another company that specifically sold webhosting, this would be a cheap and simple solution to web hosting. In house would mean that your company ran its own web server, this would most likely need someone employed to maintain it and need to be on a high speed internet connection, th

There are two types of Shared Hosting i.e Windows Shared plans and Linux Shared plans. You can choose any hosting platform from these two depending upon the applications which you have used while developing your website. If you have a website built in asp, asp.net or MS-SQL or you are willing to use any Microsoft application like ColdFusion or any other, you will have to opt for a Windows VPS. If you have a website built in PHP or HTML, than you can opt for a Linux VPS. Windows server is a bit costly then Linux, because Windows is a licensed OS and the some of the applications supported on Windows like MS-SQL Standard or Enterprise edition needs licensing too whereas Linux is open source, so its OS, database and various other applications are free to use.

In shared hosting environment, the host provider is normally accountable for managing servers, security updates, technical support, and different features of the service however in house you'll have to manage all these aspects and infrastructure yourself.

As the name says, the hosting is shared among multiple users. A dedicated server is shared among multiple users in a shared hosting. The resources of a dedicated server are shared among the users on that particular server. With help of control panel, such individual accounts can be created, which exist on the same server sharing the resources of the server. Generally the server on which these accounts are set-up, is a high configuration server. The concept of shared hosting developed, so that the users having minimal resource requirements can use a high end dedicated server and share the price for the dedicated server.
