While installing XP create partition and leave some free space for liunx and install XP in one of the partition. Then while installing linux you will get option to select where to install linux and at that time select free space and install linux in it.
For an easy fix, set up your computer to dual boot Vista and XP. When you dual boot, you can accept which operating arrangement you wish to plan with, depending on the specific task you have to perform.
I think there is some problem with your Linux installer, you can install Linux Ubuntu using the Wubi installer, Wubi installs Ubuntu as a file on your Windows system. It can be uninstalled like any other program and runs if you were using separate system partition.
which distribution of Linux you are trying to install, if you are installing Ubuntu i recommend you use live CD or you can install it on same partition (w/ windows on it) without creating new partition.
To install linux you do not need to create new partitions cos linux can use same PC hardware. Just install it on a different folder.
