I know the question is a long shot here, but if anyone knows I'd like to know for a news article that we're doing.
thanks
Thats one of the best questions i have heard in ages...

But i doupt it is happening, I know most datacenters use a lot of power and have desiel backup generaters.

And also i suppose its about location, the major data ceneters are in highly populated areas such as cities, not much wind there.

AISO is the only one that i know of that has built a truly energy efficient renewable data centre.

Of course it happens. ecologee.net tracks any ISP worldwide which uses renewables, either provided by a energy supplier or own power stations.

ecologee.net creates the Internet with regenerative energies. In 2007 we concentrate on data centers, in 2008 on carriers. Then we stabilize the Green Internet via a modifyed header in IPv6 to support a certification scheme.

We are so scared about the climate change, for which ever reasons it is originated, to gain control again, at least over the Internet.

I'll give you some numbers. The total electric energy consumption in the USA for only the IT is more than 1%, Germany consumes for IT 7% of the whole electric energy need in the country (more than the percentage of lighting), Switzerland needs 10% of the cake. Keep in mind, less percentages do not imply neccessarily an efficient usage of power, it's more the other way round. The tendency in all countries goes straight up.

Those who are interested of tons of reading about similar projects working close on the topic can have a look on External Projects

We invite you to work on this Green Internet and would be happy to get hints and help from you on our information pool. As we are more present in Germany we hope, that YOU can start to inform whereever you live, the IT-scene and please ask for IT-services with the added value of renewable energies.

Some forum members may have missed this one, but I noticed there will be a new data centre in the UK that runs on environmentally friendly energy. I wonder how many more hosting companies will follow the lead of Rackspace?

I don't think this issue of green hosting is simply about solar power. In Arizona solar power may work well, but in other places there is not enough sun to provide sufficient power, or the sun may not be the best and most efficient energy source.

Each host has to decide which method to use in their own circumstances, and in the case of this latest Rackspace data centre they chose to use renewable energy. In all cases there will be an issue about how green that energy is, because even solar power requires a lot of energy and pollution to produce the equipment necessary for a solar plant.

Indeed interesting articles. It's true that IT is very often overlooked as polluting industry, but the actors become more and more conscious as time goes by. Even in boutique companies like mine, we have people thinking over this issue.
