There are actually quite a few good hosting companies. Probably more good
ones than bad.
My experience is that before you select one, 'google' them.
I had a terrible experience with AIT Inc hosting (
www.ait.com) /
Securelook (
www.securelook.com) same company.
After paying securelook $69.00 (non refundable...they say) for a
supposedly secure SSL server, and uploading and configuring my ecommerce
site to work with it, I experienced over 10% down time in the first 40
days! Not to mention several times when the file permissions mysteriously
changed, the site came up as access denied, and I would have to upload all
of the files again to get it to work. Support there is useless. They
don't return calls and email back that either everything is fine, or, the
server is undergoing 'unscheduled mainte*****'
I subsequently 'googled' AIT / Securelook and quickly found out that I
wasn't alone. There are many complaints floating around out there. If
you find a couple of complaints about a hosting company, well, stuff
happens. But if you find a monumental archive of unsatisfied customers
and former employees, as is the case with AIT hosting and Securelook, then
I would be very hesitant. There are complaints with the BBB, on many
forums like this one, apparent legal filings and even a site dedicated to
spreading the word called aitsucks.com. Also you need to be careful with
'Hosting Companies' that are just reselling for what I consider dishonest
companies like AIT. To investigate if this is the case, just do a whois
lookup at netsol.com for the host's main domain name. If you find
something like 'ns0.aitcom.net' as the name server or any allusion to
NameServices.Net, go someplace else with your business.
Fortunately I am still within the 60 day period to dispute the charge on
my credit card for services not rendered.
Lesson learned 'google' first, signup later!
