Did you find a shell account anywhere? I'd be interested to know where you did, also I have some suggestions for organizations that provide this service for free.

More and more hosts generally don't allow shell access, which I think is a must-have for those who are used to working with shell access.

Anyone else know of any providers?

vianetworks.net allows shell access. It's almost like having a dedicated server, because they gave me my own Apache conf file, my own mysql conf file and my own php.ini. Coupled with unlimited databases and I'm in heaven. I've totalled about 30 minutes downtime in the past year.

P.S Oh yeah, I bought the Linux 30 plan which came with it's own IP.

Its quite difficult to find a good hosting company that will provide you shell acess as may lead their servers to be vulnerable !!

Most of the top hosting companies will never u provide shell acess..

I can't say anything abt the small companies who provide shell access !!

We are a medium sized web hosting company and provide SSH access when requested by customers but we have many security measures in place (i.e. no access to make/compilers) so they are just getting a shell for use with their web hosting account to make file moves, copies, privilege changes etc. We figure if they request it and like *nix shell accesss, then hey, let them have it.

Depends on the type of shell access, and what customers have access too. A shell account which is set up properly with limititations, is not a security risk. The era of "We don't offer shell accounts because they are insecure" is over and nothing more then an excuse for those systems which fail to adapt. I've been using this system for 3 years and haven't had a problem.
