Paid anti viruses, are made by big companies. They earn money on this, so they pay a lot attention on this. It means, that they are working 27/7 searching for new viruses, and creating new virus definitions. They also provide customer support. It means, that generally paid antiviruses are better than the free ones.
When Compared to Paid ones there will be more features in paid ones other than only scanning and some minor jobs which is done by free ones But Free one is enogh for home purpose .

From what I have experienced, it's best to have a free Anti-virus software than paid version, now days there are a lot of free software and I've been using ZenOK Free Antivirus, my ZenOK has kept me protected and picked up on a couple of threats too. Easy to use and not resource intensive.

It is always good to put a paid antivirus. Only they can help you fully from viruses and give extra features of finding viruses. Free virus softwares are not so good and not give full security for your system.
Compared on those paid, there will be more than other lineaments that paid in the exploration and some minor employment is being done for free, but free because home enogh.
