1) Google for reviews on various web host and top 10 web hosts...there are many reliable sites that would provide you reliable information, not to mention some may exploit these information as reviewers may favor their affiliates.
2) Look for the well know famous hosts..famous doesn't mean they have to be famous as Facebook. Make a list of hosts from various review sites so that you can narrow down the number of hosts to less than 20
3) Check for the rating and number of views and statistics of the hosts site from ALEXA this shows how famous and how many internet users look for the particular hosts site
4) Check if anything about the hosts company is listed in Wikipedia for example blue host, ipage, Hostgator is listed in Wikiperdia and got reliable information about them and their history
5) Look for the awards recieved by the hosts and if any is listed in some magazine or website.For example In August 2009, Inc. Magazine recognized HostGator as the 239th fastest growing private company in the United States
6) Look for the number of followers of the host in Facebook, Twitter and other social media...Higher the number, the better it is
7) Look for host that provide service that would enable you to grow in the future like dedicated server hosting, VPS hosting, Cloud hosting and etc and also subscribe to hosts that are GREEN as much as possible as this gives you a good competitive advantage to you and also helps you achieve your COOPERATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
8) Finally refer to existing and previous customers and get there feed back..tophosts is a good place for you find people with honest comments and review.
