German company who came in and bought a few US based hosts and a US based data center. Multi-billion dollar corporation. Gives out services practically, and provides mid level (ok kinda) support services.
I got 3 years free hosting from them when they came into the market.
I hear the uptime is good, but I wouldn't really know as I don't even use it.

Re: Is 1&1 web hosting any good?
Hello All,
I registered my domain name with 1and1.com because their domain registration prices are great; however, I am using the professional package I got for free last year and so far, I am pretty unhappy. It is a very basic package since it was free, so I don't expect for it to deliver a lot. However, I do expect a little more from 1and1; I have called several times only to get representatives that know less than I do (very scary). Their control panel, while it may be easy to understand for the very experienced webmaster, is pretty difficult to understand for a layperson like me. Granted, I am a "newbie" to the whole web hosting arena, but I imagine there are many other newbie webmasters out there who are just learning the ropes, that just need a little more guidance from a professional.
My biggest complaint? I am pointing my perfectly good domain name to a generic domain name because 1and1 wants to charge me a transfer fee to transfer my domain name from one account to another. Of course, this causes the generic domain name to be recognized over my real domain name which will eventually only delay my site from being picked up by the search engines. I am just counting the days until I can transfer my service to another host. My first criteria will be that they provide great customer service!

Hi king,
I dont really know about 1and1, but if you are looking for a web host, then it means that you have a criteria and you want a host that matches up to that criteria, so maybe you should go and search in a few more web hosting directories/search engines that list web hosts.
www.askwebhosting.com
www.hostplus.com
www.hostsearch.com
www.hostbyte.com
www.findahost.smesource.com
are a few the come to mind these are pretty good sites, just go in there, type in your query and search for a host
good luck

Yes I made the mistake of registering a domain name with 1and1, and now they won't update the DNS for me and I am the rightful owner of the domain name. I will NEVER EVER register a domain name with 1and1 and highly recommend that people SHOULD NOT register domains with them. If you want to switch hosts in the future, they will not update the DNS for you.
Ultimately I feel that because does not update the DNS (if they do, they make it extremely difficult) that they are hijacking domains. I wonder if people could sue 1and1 over this? Does anyone have any thoughts?

.htaccessed a few (12) of their IP's because of their very aggressive, robot.txt ignoring, bandwidth burning robots
reported them regarding spam several times last month

Re: Is 1&1 web hosting any good?
I don't know if this is in the correct section of the forum or not, but it seems relevant. While looking for hosting providers, be sure to type into the google search engine "hosting provider's name" "complaint". Then search through the results. I think I have saved myself a lot of grief doing this. I am still looking for a webhost which fits me and fits my budget, which is frustrating considering I have a lot of product to sell. I am glad that I have done the research, though, because some hosts who looked too good to be true and perfect for me turned out to have several complaints lodged against them.
