Canonical will provide an alternative to Microsoft dominated desktop, by featuring a new look and feel for the quicker booting speed and accommodation for the social networking websites.
The desktop addition of Canonical Ubuntu will be made available as free download on April 29. It will be installed on many machines for this summer. The version 10.04 offers the interface called �Light�, which provides integrated, breaking the old, consistent interface for Linux desktops.
The perception of a Linux user interface is that it is non integrated and non systematic. The latest desktop OS will offer more polish features. Linux and Ubuntu have credible desktop option for the users with basic needs of desktop from a few years from now. It lacks the polish and aesthetics for appealing to a wider consumer audience. This version represents an advanced towards the goal with an updated and professionally designed theme, social networking features and making the addressable market larger.
The boot speed on the release of 10.04 will be quicker on SSD based machines, like netbooks and offer the faster access to web. The release also makes the offering of Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook Edition, which in addition to faster boot speeds offers quick suspend/resume capabilities to prolong battery life.
The social networks application "Me Menu" in Ubuntu 10.04 consolidates access to and updating of social networks, inclusive of Facebook, Digg, Twitter, and Identica. Me Menu also integrates with chatting channels, which enable users to talk to others on Google Talk, MSN and other networks. Canonical provides support services priced from $55 per desktop and notebook user per year. Unlike Windows desktop platform, Ubuntu is free for download. OpenOffice application suite that works with the platform also is free. The company is carving out a base of users and does not need beat Windows to be successful.
The increased integration with Ubuntu One online service and Ubuntu's desktop Linux enables simple means for sharing and saving files and folders through cloud service. Bookmark and contact-sharing are also added. Ubuntu One offers 2 GB of free storage and 50 GB for $10 per month. There are thousands of applications running on Ubuntu's desktop Linux variant.
The users can find new software through Ubuntu Software Centre 2.0. New Ubuntu One music store integrates with version 10.04 features music from the largest labels and bands available direct to Ubuntu users via the default music player.
