From the Editor

Where are all the Web Hosting Frosh at?
As you've noticed, TopHosts.Com was remodeled two weeks ago. You did notice right?

So while many of you were polishing off pints of green beer and taking in exciting first round games from the March Madness tournament, our crew stayed in that St. Patrick's Day and put the last-minute touches to finish the site. And we did get the reaction we so craved: "Great job guys, we love the site!"

But we didn't get that overwhelming burst of enthusiasm from the newbies out there. Sure, we thank those that took the time to write in but we want more "Feedback from the Frosh". Tell us what else you want to see on the new site, what you want to read, what you like, what you dislike. We need your opinion to continue being the best Web hosting resource out there.

Ask Jennifer

I was wondering if you could explain the difference between named-based and IP-based hosting?
IP-based virtual hosts use the IP address of the connection to determine the correct virtual host to serve. Therefore you need to have a separate IP address for each host. With name-based virtual hosting, the server relies on the client to report the hostname as part of the HTTP headers. Using this technique, many different hosts can share the same IP address.

Numbers Don't Just Speak For Themselves

Recently ClickZ ran the Nielsen//NetRatings figures (please see eMarketer graph) for "Active Home Internet Users by Country, January 2006."

ClickZ reported that "…the overall growth rate stagnated in January due to a decrease in active users in a few countries." In fact, looking over the chart, active home internet users fell in Brazil, France, Germany, Japan, Sweden and the US. In total, usage was down .01%.

A casual observer could easily conclude that the number of internet users from home is about to plummet around the world!

In reality, that is not what is happening. As Ben Mackln, Senior Analyst at eMarketer explained, "Looking at the figures I would suggest that the drop off between December 2005 and January 2006 is statistically inconsequential. If we had figures for the whole of 2005 and could see a genuine trend then I would think it quite strange, but monthly variations from the trend are statistically normal."

Mr. Macklin noted several explanations for the fall off in January. "In many countries there may be less people online - they are at the beach or playing in the snow. Beyond that, the fourth quarter - and December particularly - is always a busy time for business and people going online to research and purchase gifts. That is less so in January when many shoppers have little money left after the holidays," he said.

"Many factors could explain changing figures slightly from December to January. But I certainly would not make a sweeping statement that Internet users are leaving the online world in droves as a result of these figures."
