From the Editor

Going for the Green
Celebrities such as Cameron Diaz and even the Google tycoons Sergey Brin and Larry Page gave the Toyota Prius a huge shot in the arm by driving that vehicle in their daily jaunts. Sure, it's because they are doing their bit for the environment--it's also good for the image, right?

Do the Web hosts that are using solar-powered energy to operate their data centers need the same shot in the arm? How about Tiger Woods saying: "Even when it comes to hosting my website I'm always going for the Green?" These hosts aren't in it for the image or prestige, but are installing solar panels commercially because it is a clean, cheap and renewable source of energy. It's also beyond environmental consciousness; they are running viable customer-centric businesses. It will get to a point that customers seek these companies out not just for their ecological stances but just good plain old Web hosting.

With homeowners now getting federal government tax credits and solar-panel kits being sold in department stores, maybe the new crop of Web hosts starting their businesses will go the route of AISO.net, SolarHost or ThinkHost.

Read up on AISO.net's green hosting business below. Also take a look at the advice offered by the President of Host Gator, Brent Oxley, on the business of reseller hosting...another way of grabbing some "green" from the lucrative industry.

Do you have your website hosted by a Green host? Let me know how that's working out.

Ask Jennifer

Do I have to change my domain if I get a new host?
No.
Provided that the domain is registered in your name (as it should be), you can simply update your nameservers (from where you manage your domain names) to that of your new host.

Calling for Back Up

A new security report commissioned by Symantec, and conducted by Harris Interactive (as seen in eMarketer), found that only 57% of consumer users back up the stored data on their computers, leaving the vital information of a sizable portion of the population unprotected in the event of a crash or virus attack.

What kind of data is most at risk? According to the study, 91% of computer owners store data on their computers, 71% of them keep digital pictures and 58% keep personal contact information. Among other data that is stored but goes unprotected are work-related documents, music files, financial records and movies and videos.
